Tying Emergers

Two Centuries of Soft Hackle Flies By Sylvester
Nemes. This is mostly a literature survey of over two hundred years
of history of the soft-hackled fly is covered in this book, starting with
Richard and Charles Bowlker's 1747 Art of Angling, with the first
mention of the red spinner mayfly pattern, and ending with John Reid's 1971
Clyde-Style Flies, covering some of the most radical trout fly designs
from Scotland's Clyde River. In between are great fishing writers of the
past, such as Francis Francis and G. E. M. Skues, and The Fishing Gazette,
a weekly tabloid published for nearly 100 years in England. Excellent with

Spey Flies

by Jim Capossela: This is a river by river guide of the Catskills. Great
info on lakes, rivers and streams. Has maps, hatch charts and general info
on fishing the rivers. Great guide and useful for folks that would like
to float the Delawares, contains info on landings and places to launch boats.

England Streams by Thomas Ames, Jr. The title is a bit misleading, this
book explores insects of the entire Northeast ( NY, PA and VA). Professional
photographer and 'amateur entomology enthusiast' Thomas Ames, explores the
insects of New England. Ames covers: reading water; presentations for New
England streams; tackle; night fishing; and more. The bulk of this book,
however, deals with the insects and the best flies to imitate them. Similar
in style to Jim Schollmeyer's successful Hatch Guide series, Ames
discusses the natural and its behaviors on the left-hand page and the three
best flies to imitate it on the right, including proper size and effective
techniques. Tom's color photograhpy of the naturals and their imitations
is superb, making this book as beautiful as it is useful. A must for all

Carrie Stevens, Maker of Rangeley Favorite
Trout and Salmon Flies by Graydon and Leslie Hilyard. This is a biography
of Carrie Stevens. The authors spent some 15 years researching this book
and contains several hundred flies which have never appeared anywhere else.

Dry Fly Patterns For the New Millennium By Poul Jorgensen and the CFFCM: This is the first installment of Flies for the Year 2000. As part of this display at the CFFCM, over 1800 patterns from nearly 800 tyers from all over the world submitted patterns. These were then photographed and printed in a book. Contains many interesting, unusual patterns. Intro by Dave Brandt, Jim Kruhl and Paul Dahlie executive director of the CFFCM. A portion of the proceeds from this book will go to the CFFCM. $19.95 PB

Fishy's Flies by Jay Fishy Fullum: Fishy is a regular on the show circuit and is a columnist for Fly Tyer Magazine. His articles always contain interesting, new and innovative patterns with wonderful illustrations. This book is a collection of some of his favorite flies. Many useful ideas are explained here such how to make saltwater shrimp with drinking straws and his famous swimming/kickboard foam hopper. This book is affordable and should be in every tier's set of books. $9.95 PB

Fly Patterns for Stillwaters by Phillip Rowley Phil spendt hours studying trout food sources in stillwaters. In this book he explains the link between understanding various trout foods and designing patterns which imiatate them. Useful for any lake fly fisher. $29.95 PB

of antique flies. Patterns originated by Ray Bergman, Charles Defoe, Carrie

The majority of these flies are wets and streamers with a mix of salmon
flies many of which have never appeared before in any book or magazine.

Shrimp & Spey Flies for Salmon & Steelhead by Chris Mann and
Robert Gillespie. This is a comprehensive international guide of spey
& shrimp patterns. The authors examine and select patterns from all
over the world and gather them together in one book. All images in the book
are computer drawn and very nice full color pages, this is a beautiful book.

Spey Flies and Dee Flies: Their History and Construction by John Shewey. Written by one of my FFF pals, this is the first and only book about Spey flies. Contains many antique patterns from Scotland as well as modern designs from Oregon. Also has section on materials, methods and how to construct these unique flies. Great photos, layout and excellent writing. I give John an A+ for this one. $45 Hardback.
Steelhead Fly Tying Guide by H.
Kent Helvie. If you are interested in learning how to make flies for
steelhead, this is the book for you. Covers things like spey flies, materials,
wet flies. Contains a large number of patterns, pictures and also describes

Tying Flies with CDC by Leon Links Largely a collection of European tyers' flies. The book highlights the material, development stages and history. Links selects different tyers and writes about each fly. An insight into how the tyer developed the patterns is given along with a history of the fly and how some of the flies are fished. If you are interested in CDC this is one of the few books out on this topic. $24.95
